When Bengaluru was witnessing a Covid-19 surge, social service initiatives like Mercy Angels stood at the forefront of ensuring dignified funerals for the victims. Mercy Angels, a subsidiary of the Mercy Mission NGO is a 40-member volunteer team in Bengaluru. The team has completed last rites of over 2,500 deceased in the city. As the second Covid wave wreaked devastation, these volunteers every day for three months, woke up to bury the dead.

They used to pick up the body, transport it, and coordinate with cremation or burial grounds to ensure the family bids a dignified farewell to their loved one. Not only did these volunteers go above and beyond to give the dead a dignified funeral, but they also provided free ration kits and medicines to the needy. The group were also key helpers in getting a few migrant workers back home during the lockdown.
